Jon Harold Butler was born June 4, 1940. He received a B.A. (1964) and a Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Minnesota. He was assistant professor of history at California State College, Bakersfield (1971-1975) and at the University of Illinois at Chicago (1975-1985).
